Strategy games have been very popular among players for a long time now. They are adored by young gamers, mature people, women, men - in fact - by everyone. Gameplay requires logical thinking and anticipation, strategy and logistics are important. Strategy games were booming in the 1990s and their popularity is huge even nowadays. We have prepared for you a subjective review of strategy games that have won our hearts. Many of the titles have been released as whole series or were even renewed. We invite you to a sentimental journey and a review of games from different periods of time.
THE SETTLERS
Under the name The Settlers we can find a whole series of games, the first part of which debuted in 1993. In all parts, the player takes on the role of an ancient or medieval ruler, and his task is to develop his kingdom and conquer other areas. The game is about constructing buildings and creating a network of roads between them - everything should be planned in such a way that everything works optimally and, as a result, helps to create a large army of soldiers that will face the enemy.
CIVILIZATION
Civilization is a large series of turn-based strategy games based on training units, building objects and conquering other communities. The series is characterized by guiding a nation from prehistory to the near future. By the beginning of 2018, a total of 30 million copies of various games in this series were sold.
WARCRAFT
Under the name Warcraft we can find not only a series of RTS computer games, but also stories, books, manga and comics issued by Blizzard Entertainment. Warcraft games have repeatedly won the title of The Best Strategic Game Of The Year. Their plot is based on a conflict between men and orcs. In later versions of the game, new threads are included - trolls, ogres, goblins, elves, gnomes and dwarves. Depending on which part we choose, we can also find characters such as: undead, draenei, blood elves or tauren.
HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC
A series of turn-based strategy games with a plot is set in the high fantasy reality. The first part of Heroes appeared in 1995. On the other hand, the game’s success was brought by the second part (Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars) and the third part (Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration from Erathia) of the series. Those two are considered today as unrivaled productions. The game action takes place in the fantastic world of Enroth. In different parts, the player has the opportunity to learn about various lands and historical periods. Each of the parts, of course, offers different tasks and battle to fight.
TYCOON game series
Some of the strategic economic games are colloquially called Tycoons. The popularity of Tycoons started in the 90s. Thanks to the system of the Tycoon games, everyone has the opportunity to prove himself as an entrepreneur, manager, commander or even a pirate. The advantage of these games is the educational value and the lack of risk while managing a company which could exist in real life.
SimCity
A series of strategic games in which we have to face the construction and management of a virtual city. The first part of the game was released in 1989 and received high ratings among players and critics. The popularity of SimCity is not diminishing today. The game is based on two main targets - we have to build the city's resources and the road network really wisely AND we must take care of the residents' satisfaction. Of course, the budget is limited and we have to deal with it creatively, for example by completing paid tasks. It is worth mentioning that SimCity influenced the creation of another cult simulation game - The Sims.
PATHWAY
Pathway is a completely new, tactical strategy game released in April 2019. The plot is set in the 1930s and tells about the search for great, ancient artifacts. The Nazis who compete with private collectors are also hunting those relics. The world of Pathway is modeled on the aesthetics of sensational stories printed in tabloids popular in the 1930s in the US, the so-called "Pulp stories".
The DUNE game series
Dune is also a collective title of a whole series of games based on the science fiction novel authored by Frank Herbert under the title Dune. Each of the parts impresses with an eye-pleasing graphic design created for the times in which it was created.
TOTAL WAR series of games
Total War is a series of strategy games, which are a combination of turn-based strategy and real-time strategy (the exception is Spartan: Total Warrior). The name of the games is a reference to total war, which is conducted with the maximum involvement of the society and the total dedication of economic resources. The premiere of the latest part - Total War: Three Kingdoms will take place at the end of May 2019.
FARM MANAGER 2018
Everyone has played a farm-type strategy at least once. Farm Manager 2018 is a fairly fresh version of the economic strategy, in which we must manage a agricultural holding wisely. Our task is to plant more than twenty types of crops, taking care of their development and then harvesting. In this part of the game we have the possibility of breeding animals. A large advantage of this part is the graphic design which is pleasing to the eye.
